The foundation was founded in 1974 by Mrs. Marvice Wallette and was incorporated with the state of Louisiana in 1975. At that time, very little was known about this hereditary blood disorder in the United States. So, community education became the foundation’s first priority. Other objectives were added as the foundation’s needs and resources were identified and developed. To align with the total scope of the chapter’s activities, the name was changed in 1994 to Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Inc., Northwest Louisiana Chapter (SCDAA, INC., NWLA Chapter).
The mission is to assist individuals with sickle cell conditions live stable and productive lives, and promote an awareness of sickle cell disease through leadership, education, and programs to aid individuals with sickle cell disease.
